More about these worm castings

Worm castings – also known as worm compost or vermicompost – are made by special compost worms. They turn organic material into fine, crumbly castings full of useful soil life.

The real strength of worm castings is their active soil life. Add them to Makkelijke Moestuin Soil with coco or the classic Makkelijke Moestuin Mix, and you immediately introduce billions of useful microorganisms.

This is especially useful with our coco-based Makkelijke Moestuin Soil. Coco stays wonderfully airy and absorbs water very well, but naturally contains almost no soil life. That soil life is essential for converting organic MM plant food into nutrients your plants can easily absorb.

Please note: these worm castings are already included in our Makkelijke Moestuin Soil. If you order that soil, you do not need to order the castings separately.

When should you use these worm castings?

At the start of a new gardening year, when you prepare your garden boxes for a new season.

In other words, when you turn over the coco-based Makkelijke Moestuin Soil or the classic Makkelijke Moestuin Mix and add fresh MM plant food.

At the beginning of a new season, soil life is often slow to get going, especially while the soil is still cold.

Add some worm castings and it becomes active straight away, helping your seedlings and young plants get off to a faster start.

How many worm castings do you need?

To give the soil life a boost, one 6-litre bag is enough for 16 squares of coco-based Makkelijke Moestuin Soil or the classic Makkelijke Moestuin Mix.

Why do our worm castings work so well?

It is all down to the composition. In addition to the worm castings themselves, the product contains two natural fungi.

Before you think, “Yuck, fungi!”: these are completely different from fungi that damage plants or spoil your mix.

Ours work together with your plants. They release nutrients and strengthen the roots, helping them absorb more water and nutrients. In return, the fungi receive sugars from the plant. In biology, this is called symbiosis.

Together, they make a powerful team:
  • Worm castings contain huge numbers of beneficial bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. These become active as soon as they come into contact with moisture and nutrients, immediately bringing the coco mix to life.
  • Trichoderma helps break down organic matter and supports the soil life around the roots, making nutrients available to plants even faster.
  • Mycorrhiza works together with plant roots. Fine fungal threads grow from the roots through the mix, creating a network much larger than the root system alone – almost as if the plant suddenly has many more roots with which to absorb nutrients.
